Lou LaFleur Honored with the President’s Award by the Greater Long Island Running Club

Lou LaFleur Honored with the President’s Award by the Greater Long Island Running Club

At the annual GLIRC dinner/dance on Februray 3rd, 2018, our very own Lou LaFleur was honored with club’s President’s Award.

GLIRC president, Mike Polansky acknowledged, “Lou has been a GLIRC Executive Board member for several years and the founder and guiding light of the Selden Hills Warriors, one of the most impressive and active grass roots running groups that has arisen on Long Island or anywhere else.”

Well stated by Mike, and I think we would all agree.

Lou was accompanied by not just his club members, but his family as well.

“It was an honor I will cherish and I had my family there as guests of the club to celebrate with me.”

Lou with wife Nancy, son Brian, daughter Lindsay and son-in-law Matt

The annual GLIRC dinner/dance is an evening of dining, dancing, socializing with your running buddies. This year’s event was held at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury and included  cocktail hour and buffet, unlimited premium liquors, wine, beer available throughout the evening, sit down dinner, dessert with Viennese Table, plus an International Coffee and Cordial Bar.

If this sounds good to you, be sure to join your GLIRC and be ready for next year!

Warrior of the Year 2017

Now the moment we have waited 365 days for!

The crowning of our 2017 Selden Hills Warriors of the YEAR!

So many miles through all kinds of weather day after day, month after month.

On the men’s side we congratulate Mark Ogden! He ran 1701.4 miles on our various hills courses! A simply amazing job and a well deserving winner!

On the ladies side, well the drama here was whether two time winner Debra Miccio-Franchi could put in the miles in her last month to surpass the lead built up by Triin Lawrence who left town mid month on holiday. It was epic to watch her go out day after day with her posse putting in those miles in all kinds of weather. Mostly frigid weather this past week!
But get it done she did! To the tune of 796.9 miles on the hills of Selden. Outlasting Triin by 9.9 miles and taking her third consecutive WOTY Award!
To top it off she also was our Warrior of the Month winner with a total of 170.5 miles in the Month of December!

Congratulations to the both of you!
Details on the WOTY award presentation will be forthcoming next week.
Put 2017 into the SHW archives!
We move on to see what special moments we will create in the coming year starting today!!

Family Fun Night by Maureen Vollaro

What an AWESOME night! I am overwhelmed with appreciation for all the people that volunteered and attended! Such an amazing group of people you are! Do you know how special you are? Do you know what amazing athletes you are? The energy at this event was unbelievable!

Some of my highlights of the night (getting the idea that I like to make lists?)
1. Lou: order 7 pies
Lou: order 10 pies
Lou: We are going to need 18 pies! And get carvel flying saucers too!
2. People from our group that I don’t know thanking me for organizing the event
3. Multiple people saying to me: “We have a good turnout”
4. People asking me if I am going to do it again next year (the answer is yes)
5. Meeting the family members of the folks that I have been running with this past year
6. Seeing all of the kids participating
7. Getting to chat with the spouses of folks I have been running with this past year
8. Kristin’s uncle asking me if he really was the oldest at the ripe age of 75. Then going on to ask me if he I agreed that he looked good for his age, which I agreed, he did!
9. My son approaching me and saying: “Mom you did a good job, I think it was a big hit!”
10. My daughter approaching me and saying: “Mom this is great”

The 25k Scream Machine

I promised I would post the details of the added distance to our 20K Meatgrinder course prior to the running of the first Scream Machine! 25K on 2/28/16. You have two weeks to check out the added 5K distance so you know how to pace yourself and what to expect before you run the course.

The last street before turning into the Westfield shopping center parking lot to head toward the finish is called Janice Lane. So instead of heading to the finish as you would for all our other courses you make a right onto Janice to start the final leg of the 25K course. You follow Janice and climb the hill and make a left onto Woodlawn Avenue. Cross over Adirondack to South Bicycle Path where you make a right and head south. SBP runs parallel to Adirondack so you see some familiar cross streets as you work your way to Manhasset Drive. Make a right on Manhasset to Adirondack where you make a right and run the same terrain you ran to begin the course only heading north this time. Same hills but the downhills of mile 1 are now the uphills of mile 14! When you reach Ormond Ave take a left until you reach Janice Lane once again. A right on Janice brings you back to Blue Point Rd. Make that right heading toward the shopping center parking lot. Instead of turning into the lot continue on to Middle Country Road. Make a right on Middle Country to the second entrance to the parking lot. Make a right at the entrance and follow the road until you reach the finish pole.

Once you do you’ve completed the Selden Hills Scream Machine!!! feel free to scream, laugh, cry or whatever else you might be feeling. You will be one of a short list of Warriors who take this on and live to tell the story!!!

2015 Warrior of the Year Results

2015 Warrior of the Year Results

On the women’s side…

New to the leaderboard for December is Kristyn Lineman.
39 women made the leaderboard this year vs. the 20 that made it for the 9 months we held the competition in 2014. Nice increase by the ladies!!
Their total mileage increased from the 2014 total as well. From 3457.6 to 6194.8. An amazing surge!
So while the men were the overall mileage leaders in 2014 by a margin of 529.8 the women came back and took that honor away in 2015 by a margin of 291.1 And congratulations once again to Debra Miccio-Franchi who was our Warrior Of The Year for the women in 2015!!!

For the men…

New to the last leaderboard of 2015 is Jon Frisch and Mike Russell.

The total number of men who met the minimum mileage for a month at least once was 26.
The total leaderboard mileage for the men was 5903.7 hills miles.
That bested the 2014 totals which were 23 runners and 3987.4 miles, which was only for 9 months out of the year as the WOTM competition did not begin until April 2014

Congratulations to ALL the runners who competed this year!
And congratulations once again to our male Warrior Of The Year Juan Oliveras!!
